Girl with scarf

Girl with scarf by Grace Joel

Artwork Detail

This portrait is one of the earliest important paintings created by a New Zealand woman artist. As a portrait of friendship, it is an intimate expression of a young woman’s character.

The painting, while being a key portrait in New Zealand’s art history, is only now becoming publicly known. Kept within the collection of the artist’s family, Girl with scarf entered the Auckland Art Gallery’s collection from the private collection of Hartley Joel, the artist’s nephew.
