Auckland Roofs

Auckland Roofs by Richard Collins

Artwork Detail

The notion of sitting on a roof during a hot summer's day would have been regarded in 1973 as alternative, or even radical, behaviour in Auckland.

The original condition of these 19th century wooden villas, the then odd addition of a television antenna attached to a brick chimney, the profusion of chimneys and roofs throughout the view all assist this humorous and somewhat surreal image of men casually seated on the distant roof's cresting. The fact that the photographer has himself been on a roof in order to make the photograph further adds to the charm of this image.
