Milford Sound

Milford Sound by Marian Maguire

Artwork Detail

This plate is a reworking of Achilles and Ajax. Remnants of the earlier work can be seen, particularly in the sky. The reoccurring image of Ajax and Achilles playing chess emphasises the moments of stillness and contemplation that occur between the fighting. Maguire refers in the background to John Buchanan’s 1863 topographical watercolour of Milford Sound. (Southern Myths, 2005)
