Wenceslaus Hollar (Artist), Albrecht Dürer

Saint George and the Dragon

Saint George and the Dragon by Wenceslaus Hollar, Albrecht Dürer

Artwork Detail

On arriving in England, one of Hollar’s tasks was to document works of art in the Earl of Arundel’s large collection. This is one of three etchings that record drawings by Albrecht Dürer which probably belonged to the earl, two of which (St Christopher and St George and the Dragon) are now in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg. The three prints were all made in 1642, the year that the earl left England. As the patron saint of travellers, St Christopher was an appropriate subject for that time.
