Michael Dunn Archive

Michael Dunn is a major New Zealand art historian, writer and academic. For over four decades, he has written, or jointly written, major monographs on New Zealand painting and sculpture, and on the following artists: John Kinder, Girolamo Pieri Nerli, Gordon Walters, Russell Clark and Frances Hodgkins. His doctoral research on Gordon Walters has become a seminal resource on this distinguished artist’s career. In addition, Dunn worked closely with artist Theo Schoon in research and publications on Maori rock art.

Dunn was first lecturer and then Head of both Art History and Fine Arts during his tenure at the University of Auckland from 1965 until his retirement in 2006. He was awarded the title of Emeritus Professor of Fine Arts in recognition of his leading work as one of Australasia’s preeminent art historians and writers.
