Hugh has played a vital role as an art detective, sorting out
originals from copies and fakes, as well as writing extensively
about Gainsborough's paintings.

ABOUT HUGH BELSEY
Hugh Belsey held the post of Curator of Gainsborough's House in
Sudbury for 23 years. During his time there the collections were
transformed and when he left he was awarded an MBE.
Hugh is presently a Senior Research Fellow at the Paul Mellon
Centre for Studies in British Art, and is writing the definitive
catalogue of portraits by Thomas Gainsborough.
He lectures widely in Britain, Continental Europe, America and
Australia. He frequently writes exhibition and book reviews,
articles for a variety of periodicals in the UK and America, and
was a contributor to the Oxford Dictionary of Art and the Oxford
Dictionary of National Biography.
