Photography and copyright

You are welcome to take still and video photographs for personal (i.e non-commercial) use in the galleries housing the permanent collection, with the exception of the Maori portraits of known ancestors. Photography and filming are normally not permitted in the temporary exhibition galleries.

All restricted areas will display signage at the entrance of the exhibition or gallery space advising of the photography restrictions.  An icon will also appear on the label of the known Maori portraits.

The use of tripods, flash or other means of artificial lighting is prohibited.

For security reasons, the same restrictions apply to the photographing or filming of technical installations and equipment.

The reproduction of images of works from the permanent collection is permitted for private, non-commercial, or  media review use only, otherwise it is a breach of the Copyright Act.

Special permits for photography or filming in restricted areas may be authorised for educational, research or media-related projects, if no reproductions are available and copyright law permits.

For information on reproduction requests and commercial filming and photography permits click here.

The Gallery respects artistic and intellectual property rights. Many of the works displayed at the Gallery are subject to copyright legislation. The artist/copyright holder retains the right to reproduce a work of art. The Gallery is responsible for ensuring that right is protected.

No image, documentation or sound recording displayed at the Gallery or appearing on the Gallery website may be reproduced, communicated or copied without permission, other than for the purposes of private research or study, in which case full and proper attribution must be given. For the Maori portraits, this will also include gaining permission from the descendants of a sitter.

Unauthorised commercial publication or reproduction of any part of the Auckland Art Gallery Collection is prohibited and in breach of the Copyright Act.

It is the individual's responsibility to obtain permission from the copyright holders, or their agent, before a reproduction of any work or any other content is made.  Not adhering to these conditions may constitute an infringement of Copyright regulations, which may incur penalties including fines to the person involved.
