  • Julian and Josie Robertson Collection

    This promised gift of 15 works of art to the Gallery through its Foundation, from New York art collectors and philanthropists Julian and Josie Robertson, represents some of the major European artists of the modern era.

    Thanksgiving Foundation

    Formed in 1998 the Thanksgiving Foundation's intention is to build a collection of international master works.

    Dr Walter Auburn

    In 1982 on the death of Dr Walter Auburn, print collector and valued adviser to the Gallery's prints and drawings department, the Mackelvie Trust received his magnificent collection of over one and a half thousand prints by Callot, Piranesi, della Bella and Hollar.

    Sir Rex Nan Kivell

    In 1953 the New Zealand-born director of London's Redfern Gallery, Rex Nan Kivell gifted 311 contemporary prints by leading British artists to the Auckland Art Gallery.

    Patrons of the Gallery

    Under the leadership of Dayle Mace, the group's chairperson, The Patrons of the Gallery continue to benefit the Gallery's contemporary New Zealand art collection and its programmes.

    Lucy Carrington Wertheim

    Lucy Carrington Wertheim gifted 154 works by modern British artists to the Gallery in 1948, through her support of expatriate artist Frances Hodgkins.

    Friends of the Gallery

    From 1954 onwards a broad range of social and educational events in support of the Gallery were organised by the Art Gallery Associates.

    The Partridge Collection

    The Partridge Collection of paintings of Mäori by Gottfried Lindauer was donated to the Gallery in 1915.

    Throughout the 20th century the Gallery has benefited from gifts received from leading citizens.

    Chartwell Trust

    Chartwell is an independent body whose collection of approximately 1300 works of New Zealand and Australian contemporary art has been acquired over 25 years, through the insight, enthusiasm and diligence of trustee Rob Gardiner.

    The Edmiston Trust

    In 1971 a further addition to the main building was opened, the Edmiston wing and sculpture garden, using funds bequeathed in 1948 by Auckland businessman, P. A. Edmiston.

  • E. H. McCormick Bequest

    In 1995 Hodgkins' biographer, Dr E. H. McCormick, a pioneering historian of New Zealand art, left a valuable bequest to the Gallery

    James Tannock Mackelvie

    In 1893 the gifts and bequests of James Tannock Mackelvie to the City of Auckland were displayed in the Gallery for the first time.

    Mackelvie Trust

    Mackelvie intended that the residue of his estate be used to build a gallery in Auckland in which his collection would be displayed.

    Sir George Grey

    Sir George Grey, governor of New Zealand from 1845 to 1853 and from 1861 to 1867, was the founding donor for Auckland's public library and its art gallery.

    Colin McCahon and Frances Hodgkins

    The collection of Colin McCahon's work grew through purchases, gifts from the McCahon family and a major bequest from the artist, who died in 1987.
