Overview
Exhale explores themes of human vulnerability and the
brevity of life, showcasing physically imposing photographic, print
and painted works at the Pah Homestead, TSB Bank Wallace Arts
Centre.
Exhale is one half of a pair of simultaneous Auckland
exhibitions of Ward's works. The exhibitions draw together two
strands of Vincent Ward's career, as a leading figure in the
feature film industry and his background in fine arts.
Ward's ongoing concern with metamorphosis, light, darkness and
immersive experience has led him to create a series of physically
imposing works that delve into otherworldly landscapes and
transcendent states, seeking elusive 'transformational moments'
that connect with the human psyche. Amongst the many explorations
Ward draws upon his aesthetics for Motion Painting that led to an
Academy Award. Referencing this aesthetic, Ward investigates the
cusp between photography, paint and digital imaging to present a
range of transformational moments.
Depicted are figures enacting moments of transformation as they
fall, fly and float or attempt to surface and breathe. The second
simultaneous exhibition, Inhale, will be held at the
Gus Fisher Gallery and will feature Ward's cinematic
installations.
Alongside exhibitions Inhale and Exhale, a new 180-page book, also
titled Inhale | Exhale, will be launched by award-winning
publisher Ron Sang.
Vincent Ward's Inhale | Exhale project will go on to
feature in the 9th Shanghai Biennale, October 2012.
