Overview
Painter, printmaker and fabric designer, May Smith (1906-1988)
was born in India and arrived in New Zealand with her family in
1921. She studied at the Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland and the
Royal College of Art in London, and spent time with Frances
Hodgkins in Ibiza in 1933. After teaching art, she retired to the
Coromandel in 1960. These documents consist of artwork and
correspondence, photographs, sketchbooks, newspaper clippings,
audiotapes, diaries, notes, colour slides and ephemera.
