Secondary Learning

We offer a variety of visit options for secondary students. Be introduced to a range of different artworks by a Volunteer Guide, who can tailor their tour to your teaching needs; work with the Gallery Educators to practice analysis skills in our new curriculum aligned programme What do you think? Making Meaning from Art; or come as a self-guided group.

GROUP GALLERY VISITS: YEARS 9-13

Volunteer Guides provide a choice of guided tours that welcome secondary students to Auckland Art Gallery and its exhibitions and facilities.

They are flexible, ranging from a general gallery introduction to those that offer more in depth engagement.

These tours can be designed to achieve your students learning objectives by focussing on specific artists, collections and exhibitions.

EDUCATOR FACILITATED PROGRAMME: YEARS 9-13

What do you think? Making Sense of Art

This educator facilitated programme focuses on encouraging critical and creative thinking in students, using original works of art as the starting point. It is designed to link to curriculum needs by giving students the opportunity to transfer and extend on skills and knowledge they are already developing in the classroom setting, and apply these in a real world context.

The programme includes two separate sessions - a gallery educator facilitated session, and a classroom teacher facilitated session.

The educator facilitated session includes:

  • Analysis of two focus artworks, and discussion around the formal and interpretive qualities of these.
  • A debate! Students will participate in a group debate across a range of artworks. There are three debate topics to select from:
  1. 'This is relevant to us today/This is not' in response to historic artworks
  2. 'Of those on display, this artwork best represents a New Zealand identity/This work doesn't' in response to New Zealand artworks
  3. 'This is art/This is not art' in response to contemporary artworks (not available Term 2 2013).
Options for debate are subject to availability.

The classroom teacher facilitated session can be used to fulfil programme related or broader school curriculum goals. Optional worksheets to support this part of the visit are provided too. Worksheets include:

  • Building a personal response to an artwork
  • Analysing an artwork
  • Thinking about roles and perspectives in developing exhibitions

Due to the specific nature of the programme, the educator facilitated session uses pre-defined artworks for the focus. If these do not directly link to topics of study, the self-guided session can be used to fulfil these needs.

SELF-GUIDING VISITS

We can support your self-guiding sessions by providing you with optional worksheets to use with your students. Please request these when you book your visit. These are the same worksheets used in the secondary programme What do you think? Making Meaning from Art.
