Bush Mill, Whatipu

Bush Mill, Whatipu by Charles Blomfield

Artwork Detail

Whatipu kauri mill was one of many bush mills surrounding Auckland during the 19th century. Here, the economic importance that the timber industry had for Auckland’s growth is superbly counterpoised against the splendour of the indigenous rainforest.

Blomfield became a passionate advocate for the conservation of native bush and reflected that he was grateful that, having arrived in New Zealand in 1863, he saw the country “before the hand of man had spoiled most of its natural beauty.” (Picturing History, 2009)
