Artwork Detail

While the spell on Tongatapu was punctuated by dramatic events, time was also spent exploring the island, collecting and drawing natural history specimens and exchanging items with locals. This enormous tree near the water obviously captured their interest, its size is emphasised by the tiny figures at its base. Members of the crew, with the help of a Tongan man, appear to be measuring the tree's circumference using a length of rope.
